Free Kundli Online: How to Make & Read Your Birth Chart (Janam Kundali)
A kundli (also spelled kundali, or called a janam kundali / birth chart) is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment you were born — which sign each planet occupied, and which sign was rising on the eastern horizon at your birthplace. Everything else in astrology is built on top of this one map.

- Date of birth — fixes the slow-moving planets (Jupiter, Saturn and beyond) and your sun sign.
- Time of birth — the Moon moves about 13° per day and the lagna changes sign roughly every two hours, so even 15–20 minutes can matter. Check a birth certificate or hospital record if you can.
- Place of birth — the latitude and longitude determine which sign was rising, i.e. your lagna (ascendant).
No birth time? You can still generate a useful chart: your planets in signs — including, on most days, your moon rashi — don't need it. Only the lagna and house placements become uncertain.
The three pillars of your chart
1. Sun sign — your core identity
Where the Sun sat at your birth. It describes your essential vitality, ego and life direction. (Note: Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, so your Vedic sun sign may differ from the Western one by one sign.)
2. Moon sign (rashi) — your inner world
In Indian astrology the moon sign is the most-used point: your rashi is the sign the Moon occupied at birth, and daily rashifal predictions are written for it. It governs emotions, instincts and how you feel safe.
3. Lagna (ascendant) — how you meet the world
The sign rising in the east at your birth moment. It sets the entire house structure of your kundli and colours your appearance, first impressions and approach to life. Read our full guide: What is your lagna and why it changes everything.
How to read your kundli in five steps
- Find the lagna. That sign is your 1st house — your self.
- Locate the Moon. Its sign is your rashi; its house shows where your emotional attention lives.
- Scan planet by planet. Each planet carries a theme (Venus: love and beauty; Mars: drive; Saturn: discipline and lessons) and expresses it in the style of its sign.
- Look for clusters. Three or more planets in one sign or house mark a dominant life theme.
- Check the aspects. Angles between planets show which parts of you cooperate (trines, sextiles) and which are in creative tension (squares, oppositions).
Common kundli questions
Can I make a kundli without birth time?
Yes. Use 12:00 noon as a neutral placeholder — planets in signs will be correct for most purposes, but treat the lagna and houses as unknown.
Is an online kundli accurate?
The astronomy is: positions are computed with standard formulas, the same math planetarium software uses. What varies between sites is interpretation. Be wary of any tool that pairs your "free" kundli with fear-based upselling — doshas that only a paid puja can fix, and so on.
North Indian, South Indian or Western style?
Same data, different diagrams. North Indian charts fix the houses and rotate the signs; South Indian charts fix the signs; Western charts draw a 360° wheel. Celestia uses the wheel because it makes aspects — the angles between planets — visible at a glance.
